Eight Japanese trading companies analyzed by Bluefield—Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui Corporation, Hitachi Corporation, Itochu Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Toyota Tsusho, and Sojitz Corporation—reported a combined US$592.1 billion in assets under management in 2023.

Initially formed in post-World War II Japan, these Japanese companies (i.e., sogo shosha) are large conglomerates housing a wide array of businesses ranging from automakers to logistics to plant development. In some cases, these firms also function like private equity (PE) investors through their investment arms.
