Over the last five years, breweries in the U.S.—large, midsize, regional, and small—have scaled significantly on the heels of urban demand for craft beer. The thrust of this activity has been driven by the smaller end of the facility spectrum. At the close of 2019, there were 7,906 facilities in the U.S., of which only 76 were large (e.g. Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors).
This growth, however, comes at a cost including increasing wastewater discharge rates (e.g. surcharges) posed by municipal utilities, regulatory permits. Because of this, the market size for water and wastewater management exceeded US$335 million in 2018.
