Helping a global equipment manufacturer gain direct insights into utilities’ challenges, in order to identify key priorities supporting the company’s 2040 strategy and targeted growth in this market

The Challenge

A Europe-based equipment manufacturer with a historical focus on pumps was working on the development of its 2040 strategy. The company was looking for support to identify the challenges and priorities of utilities, and ultimately refine its strategy to seize growing opportunities notably in the digital space. It sought Bluefield Research to carry out a voice-of-the-customer survey at the global scale, and identify key pockets of opportunities.

Bluefield Engagement

Bluefield conducted 30 interviews with decision-makers in water and wastewater utilities located in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific. Conversations allowed us to identify and rank key challenges affecting utilities–related to the availability of water resources, infrastructure adaptation, financing of assets, among others–, strategies deployed with regards to sustainability, approaches to digital water solutions, and perceptions of cloud-based tools and as-a-service models. Bluefield provided strategical recommendations to the client and its global team for positioning themselves on those different topics and continuing to grow in the municipal water market.

Accelerating Outcomes

The project supported the client preparation of its mid-term global strategy, providing insights regarding how to best continue to serve utility end-customers and takeaways to inform its product portfolio and growth strategy.
